I’ve lost entire weekends to Hogwarts Legacy. As soon as the castle gates opened in February 2023, Avalanche Software’s take on the late-1800s wizarding world felt like a second home — part nostalgia trip, part giant checklist of magical chores. The game sold incredibly well, pushed the studio into the AAA conversation, and made a sequel feel almost inevitable. But after replaying it recently in early 2026, I keep asking myself whether another massive, hundred-hour open-world sequel is actually the smartest next move.

A Sequel Is Likely, but Not Set in Stone

As of now, a direct Hogwarts Legacy sequel has not been officially confirmed. Given how much money the first game made and how engaged the community remains, I’d be shocked if Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software weren’t already deep in pre-production. Still, the fact that nothing is locked in gives the studio a rare chance to experiment before returning to the familiar open-world template.

The original was structurally sound because Avalanche built a reliable loop: explore the castle and highlands, fight dark wizards, brew potions, solve Merlin trials, collect beasts, and fill out the field guide. That formula worked wonderfully in 2023. But reusing it wholesale for a sequel could make the return trip feel like a very long homework assignment.

Smaller Spin-Offs Could Give Hogwarts New Life

I don’t think a mainline sequel needs to copy the first game’s scale to succeed. The Harry Potter license is flexible enough to support smaller, weirder projects that take one slice of the lore and make it sing. A proper spin-off could fill the gap before a big, inevitable sequel arrives.

Some ideas I would genuinely love to see:

  • ♟️ Wizard’s Chess Tactics — a strategy RPG in the vein of Fire Emblem or The Banner Saga, built around living chess pieces, house rivalries, and brutal magical board battles.

  • 🧹 Quidditch Story Mode — not a full sports sim, but a narrative sports game similar to Pyre, where matches carry story consequences and rivalries develop over a season.

  • 🏰 Hogwarts Origins ARPG — a class-based action RPG that digs into the founders and the castle’s history, giving players a deeper look at how the school became what it is.

  • 📸 Fantastic Beasts Snap — a Pokémon Snap-style on-rails photography game set in the Vivarium, helping players understand the nuances of magical creatures and where to find them.

These don’t have to replace a sequel. They can build anticipation and fill the gap. A tight ten-hour spin-off would also let Avalanche test new mechanics without betting the entire franchise on them.

Player Burnout Is a Bigger Threat Than Any Dark Wizard

Hogwarts Legacy is not as overwhelmingly huge as Elden Ring or Tears of the Kingdom, but it still asks you to invest dozens of hours completing side quests, collecting resources, battling enemies, and filling out the field guide. That is usually fine for one game. If a sequel reuses the same mechanics with better graphics and a new story, the return trip can feel less magical.

I’ve seen this happen with Spider-Man and Borderlands. The core gameplay loop and progression cycle don’t change drastically between releases, so even good sequels can leave players exhausted because they know exactly what the next upgrade or side mission will look like. Familiarity is comforting, but it also shortens the honeymoon period.

By mixing in a semi-sequel or spin-off first, Avalanche could reset player expectations. A shorter, focused experience — maybe a mystery at Ilvermorny, a Quidditch season, or a deep dive into the Room of Requirement’s history — would keep the wizarding world in the conversation without demanding another 70-hour commitment. Then, when the big direct sequel finally arrives in 2027 or 2028, players will be hungry for it instead of already half-burned-out from 2023.

That is the real opportunity here. Hogwarts Legacy proved the franchise can dominate the sales charts. Now Avalanche has the rare freedom to prove it can surprise us too.
